DNA and Genetic Genealogy

Today many genealogists are turning to DNA testing to help break down any walls they may have. With the use of DNA testing it can help confirm your paper trail. It can help solve many mysteries including migration patterns of your ancestors, discover birth parents for adoptees, or even ancestors you never knew you had. latest research techniques to reveal your family's unique story.

Before you even begin completing DNA testing, you need to ensure that you are actually ready to receive your results. Many hidden secrets can be hidden within your DNA, prior to testing it’s highly recommended that you are 100% ready for what your results could reveal.

There are three main DNA tests: Autosomal DNA (atDNA), Mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA), and Y-chromosome DNA (Y-DNA). What does this mean? If  you complete the mtDNA test you will be testing your maternal lineage, Y-DNA is only available to men and can trace your paternal lineage. Most who complete the DNA test are completing the atDNA test.

Many are turning to DNA and genetic genealogy to help with their own research but also to help solve many mysteries. Using DNA can help validate your own research that you have completed, and your own paper trail.

Most recently police are using Investigative Genetic Genealogy, and working with genealogists to help solve current and unsolved crimes. A famous case solved by using genetic genealogy includes The Golden State Killer. The military has also begun using genetic genealogy to help identify fallen soldiers, to provide closure for family members and give them a proper burial.

March 2025, I have continued my education with the International Institute for Genealogical Studies, enrolling into the DNA & Genetic Genealogy Certificate Program. Currently building on my current skills in this new field that is becoming in high demand.
